Before trying to remove blood stains from clothes you should take care of the following things:
In this section we will see:
In this section, we will see how to remove blood stains in 5 ways:
Instead of buying a stain remover, you can use your regular shampoo. Rinse as much blood out as you can with cold water. Next, soak the fabric in cold water for 15 minutes. Wring out the excess water from the fabric. Rub a tablespoon of table salt into the stain on the damp fabric. Pour a tablespoon of shampoo onto the salt and rub the fabric together. Once the shampoo starts to lather, add another tablespoon of salt. Rub the combination into the fabric. Rinse the fabric completely in cold water. Wash the fabric in cold water.
In general, shampoos are not harsh as they are directly used on the human body. Hence, this method will work well for almost all fabrics. We will still recommend you use mild shampoos for this stain-removal process. Because some delicate fibres like silk may not react well to products loaded with heavy chemicals.
Baking soda is one ingredient which can be used on all fabrics. It is safest for delicate garments like silk, wool, etc. It doesn’t rip off colour which makes it ideal for both light and dark-coloured clothes as well. If you have a blood stain on a delicate garment, you need to use a different kind of stain remover. Soak the garment in cold water for 15 to 30 minutes. Pour a small amount of baking soda onto the fabric. Rub it into the stained area with a soft toothbrush. Wash the garment on the delicate cycle in cold water.
If you want to remove blood stains from white clothes hydrogen peroxide can be the best option as it can make whites brighter. It should not be used on some synthetic fabrics including:
Can’t identify the type of fabric to pick a stain remover?
On other fabrics you can use it as follows:
Rinse the blood stain with cold water, and pour a generous amount of peroxide directly onto the fabric. Rub the peroxide into the fabric to saturate it. Let the peroxide sit on the stain for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Wash the material in cold water. If the stain persists, you can repeat the process. If the peroxide bubbles when it hits the fabric, don’t worry, this is normal. It means that the peroxide is dissolving the proteins in the blood and lifting out the stain.
Hydrogen peroxide has many other uses in laundry, in case you want to check them out, click here.
Pro tip: In case the stain is too tough, you can let hydrogen peroxide soak into a stain overnight. The longer hydrogen peroxide stays on a stain the better it works. Repeat the process listed above the next day.
It may seem strange but dish wash liquid can also act as a stain remover in your laundry room. To remove blood stains with a dish wash liquid you pour 1 tablespoon of liquid directly onto the fabric. Make sure it saturates the fabric. Let the liquid sit on the stain for 15 to 30 minutes. The stain should loosen. Rub cold water over the stain to remove the soap. Wash in cold water. In general, dish wash liquids are not heavily concentrated in comparison to regular detergents. Hence, it is safer to use on almost all washable fabrics.
Don’t have to time to remove stains at home?
In case you don’t have time to apply stain remover, you can try to remove blood stains by blotting them. But, this will only work on a fresh blood stain which is not deeply soaked by the fabric. You can also call it a light blood stain.
Rinse the fabric. Using paper towels is one way to help pull out a stain when you are on the go and can’t wash your clothes immediately. Find a few paper towels to place behind the stained part of the fabric. The thicker the paper towels, the better they will be at pulling out the blood and water. Take a paper towel and soak it in cold water. Place the saturated paper towel over the stain and apply pressure. The water should pass through the fabric and soak into the paper towels placed behind the stain. Keep soaking the paper towel in water to continue removing the blood from the fabric.
This process might not remove all the blood stains as it does not involve any specific stain remover.
If the stain persists, you may need to repeat any of these methods. And if it still doesn’t go away, you should visit a dry cleaner near you.
This was all about how to remove blood stains from washable fabrics. However, if you need to remove stains from a “dry clean only” garment, you have two options. In case you have a clothes dryer machine at home, you can use a home dry cleaning kit for stain removal. Make sure you use the stain remover provider in the kit prior to putting the garment in the dryer bag. You should know that dryer kits may or may not remove the stains completely. Hence, the second option is to visit a good dry cleaning store. Because professionals have access to better machines and special chemicals to remove blood stains from any type of fabric. You can rely on them.
