Towels collect moisture, dead skin cells, and bacteria over time, especially bathing towels. Washing them correctly ensures they remain hygienic, soft, and free from unpleasant odors. If not cared for properly, towels may develop mildew, rough texture, and reduced absorbency. By following the right washing methods, you can prolong their lifespan and maintain their plush feel.
Here is the step by step process of “how to wash a towel”:
Always wash towels separately from clothes to prevent lint transfer and ensure thorough cleaning. Washing them alone also prevents fabric damage caused by zippers and buttons.
Use a mild detergent to maintain the softness of your towels. Avoid using excessive detergent, as residue buildup can make towels stiff and less absorbent.
Hot water (130-140°F) is ideal for killing bacteria and germs, especially for heavily used towels. However, warm water (90-110°F) is recommended for colored towels to prevent fading.
Fabric softeners can reduce the absorbency of towels by coating the fibers with a waxy residue. Instead, use white vinegar (half a cup per load) to naturally soften towels and eliminate detergent buildup.
If towels develop a musty smell, add half a cup of baking soda to the wash cycle. It helps remove odors, brightens whites, and enhances softness.
Tumble Drying: Use a low to medium heat setting to prevent fabric damage and shrinkage.
Line Drying: Air drying towels under the sun helps kill bacteria and gives them a fresh scent.
Avoid Over-Drying: Excessive heat can make towels rough and reduce their lifespan.
