Do you want to hand wash clothes at...
Read MoreYou try to keep your babies from everything that may hurt them, but are you washing their clothes safely? If not then you are putting your tiny humans at risk of infection, rashes and other such issues. Because things like harsh detergents or slight stiffness in clothes are generally not a big issue for adults, but they can be extremely harsh on babies as their skin is highly sensitive.
We have shared how you can wash baby clothes carefully. You can keep reading to know different useful tips.
You can always do baby’s laundry in two ways: Machine Wash & Hand Wash.
Pro-tip: Maintain a separate load
No matter which laundry method you choose, prefer a baby-only load. This means, you should not mix baby’s laundry with adults’ laundry, bedding, etc.
Clean and Sanitize your Hands
Remember, the human hand is a source of bacteria. First of all, you should clean and sanitize your hands before handling baby’s clothes.
Use mild or organic detergent
Your body is extremely different from that of babies and toddlers. Using regular detergents could damage their skin. It can also cause allergic reactions and maybe even cut your baby’s skin. Ensure you use a detergent that is cleared for baby skin. If it is non-chemical and eco-friendly then it is even better. Some mild detergents that are easily available online and in retail stores are Mamaearth plant-based laundry detergent, Natural Baby laundry detergent by The Moms & Co, Himalaya germ-free baby wash, etc.
Soak before and after the wash
Bacteria can build up before a wash, to ensure you kill most bacteria, soak your baby’s clothes in hot water before a wash for 30 minutes, wash and finally soak in warm water after the wash.

While it is recommended that you hand wash baby clothes, it can be time-consuming and exhausting. For the parents who aren’t able to hand wash their baby’s clothes here are a few tips to machine wash baby clothes:
Wash baby clothes before other clothes
Washing machines face all sort of dirt, dust, and stains from clothes. This makes them a hotbed of bacteria. Thus, it is better to wash your baby’s clothes before other laundry. Otherwise, the bacteria from other clothes like your active wear, bedding from your clothes shifting to theirs, ensure the baby’s clothes are washed first.
Pre-soak with detergent
Take a bucket of water at a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (lukewarm water). Add half a cup of mild detergent. Soak the baby’s clothes in there for half an hour before adding them to the machine. You have to use a mild, non-chemical detergent, we have already listed some detergents earlier in this blog, please refer to the above section.
Rinse the clothes twice
To ensure the soap is fully removed from the fabric and the bacteria is washed off, run the rinse cycle two times. Once with the soap in the washing machine and another time with no soap or detergent, the second spin and rinse cycle should only be with water
Pro-tip: We recommend you prefer hand washing as the agitation of a washing machine will be harsh on your baby’s clothes.
We do not recommend using a dryer machine for baby clothes because of the excessive heat they produce. In case you use dryer sheets while running the dryer, you should never put the baby’s clothes inside. Because the chemicals present in dryer sheets are not ideal for the sensitive skin of babies. It is ideal to dry baby laundry under direct sunlight. Because sunlight is a natural disinfectant and deodorizer.
If you don’t have access to sunlight you can line dry baby’s laundry indoors as well.
Make sure your baby’s clothes are completely dry before the tiny tots wear them or you store the clothes. In case there will be moisture trapped in the fibres, it will give rise to fungal infections.
There are a few additional things to take care of while dealing with woollen clothes.
Safety Tips To Do Baby’s Laundry
Got tough stains?
We’ll remove them!
Do not wash after one wear
Make your baby wear woollen sweaters 2-3 times before you wash them. It helps in preserving wool from the agitation of the machine. Wool often loses its softness and fluffiness with frequent machine wash.
If you still want to wash woollens after every wear, consider sending them to a professional Laundromat. Because, they use mild organic chemicals to keep the shine, softness and fluffiness of wool intact.
Read the garment care label
Just like you read garment care labels while washing any other fibres, do it with woollens too. You may already know wool is a delicate fibre. People still wash it in machines, but some woollen fibres are extremely delicate and they cannot withstand the agitation of the machine even once. If the care label says “hand wash only”, do as it says. You should always use wool-safe detergent, such as Woolite.
Do not line dry wool
While line drying is the best way to dry your clothes, it is not ideal to line dry woollens. Because wool is prone to shrinkage. If you will hang wet woollen clothes, there are high chances they will stretch and lose their original shape and size. We do not recommend using a dryer machine as well.
You can spread a clean white microfiber towel on a flat surface. Squeeze the woollen clothes after rinsing with slight pressure to get rid of extra moisture. And, leave it to dry in an airy space. If you have a space where clothes can dry under direct sunlight, it is even better.
Don’t have to time to remove stains at home?
Yes, even though you are using brand-new clothes, you should prewash them before use. Because let’s agree clothes have their own journey. From factories to the shelf of stores, they go through different places. Hence, there are always fair chances that they will catch germs.
We do not recommend using dryer sheets in the baby’s laundry. Because dryer sheets contain strong chemicals which can be harmful to baby’s sensitive skin. It is better to dry your baby’s clothes under the sun or you can line dry laundry indoors as well.
Yes, fabric softeners or fabric conditioners are very helpful for keeping baby’s clothes snuggly soft. You just have to read the garment care label. Because, some baby clothes come with a flame-resistant coating. And, it is not ideal to use fabric softeners on such clothes. If there is no such case, use a gentile, hypoallergenic fabric softener.
Parents have a constant urge to keep their babies safe and comfortable in every possible way. Because these tiny humans are sensitive and can get infections from anywhere.
In such cases, you should be extra careful with the detergents and laundry additives that you are using. We recommend you consult a doctor to know the main cause behind the allergy. Doctors often prescribe the best suitable products to use for babies in such conditions.
