Traditional Dresses Of Men

When it comes to the traditional dress of men in Rajasthan, majestic turban, anghrakha, dhoti, etc come in mind, reminding us of royal outfit of ancient Rajasthani people and still men in Rajasthan wear them in the respect of their culture and they feel connected with their roots.

1. Angrakha and Bandhgala

Anghrakha is the epitome of the traditional dress of Rajasthani men. With a simple cotton kurta, it gives a royal attire to the Rajasthani men. Anghrakha means “that which protects our body,” and this is what the anghrakha does. Although, there are two types of anghrakha found in Rajasthani traditional wear. One is mid-thigh length with a frock-like design, and the other one is straight with knee length, also known as a kurta. These attires are customized to make them breathable and comfortable, preventing extreme heat in Rajasthan. For special occasions, you will also see some mirror work and other work in these anghrakhas to make them special.

Now, coming to bandhgala, it is also a traditional Rajasthani attire that looks like a blazer and is made from rich fabric, which is specially worn on special occasions over an anghrakha.

2. Dhoti & Pyjamas

Dhoti is not just a traditional garment but also one of the most ancient attires worn by men in Rajasthan. Symbolising simplicity, culture, and grace, the dhoti has remained a significant part of Rajasthani heritage for centuries. It is usually made from pure cotton fabric, keeping comfort in mind for the region’s hot and dry climate. Most commonly seen in white, a dhoti is a single long piece of cloth that is expertly wrapped around the waist, draped from the hips to the ankles, passed between the legs, and tucked securely at the back above the tailbone. Its length varies based on the wearer’s preference, some choose a knee-length style for daily tasks and farming, while others opt for ankle-length versions during special occasions.

With changing trends and evolving fashion, pyjamas have become a modern and convenient variation of this traditional lower garment. Pajamas are simple, trouser-like bottoms crafted from soft cotton to ensure ease of movement and everyday comfort. On festive or ceremonial days, men switch to more luxurious silk pyjamas beautifully adorned with colourful borders or intricate embroidery work, giving them a stylish and regal look. Together, dhotis and pyjamas reflect Rajasthan’s blend of tradition, functionality, and evolving fashion.

It is also important to keep these clothes at their best condition. Mirrors embedded and other embellishments on dress need a special care while washing. 1. Ghagra

Ghagras are the signature attire of Rajasthani women, representing grace, culture, and tradition. Known across the country for their vibrant beauty, ghagras have a special place in Indian fashion and are admired for their intricate craftsmanship. The outfit mainly consists of two parts, the skirt and the blouse.

The lower garment is a long, flowing skirt that creates a beautiful flare while showcasing exquisite artistry. These skirts are often decorated with geometric patterns, mirror work, embroidery, and broad gota patti borders that add richness and sparkle. A wide range of fabrics, from cotton, crepe, and chiffon to georgette and silk that are used to make ghagras suitable for both daily wear and grand festivities. Vibrant traditional prints like Bandhej, Laharia, Tie-and-Dye, Mothra, and Chunari further enhance their Rajasthani essence and offer endless colour combinations.

The upper part of the attire is the blouse, commonly known as kanchli, choli, or kurti. It is tailored to fit the body and designed in various fabrics, colours, and handwork styles, complementing the skirt perfectly. Intricate embroidery, mirror embellishments, and regional motifs make each piece unique.

The timeless charm of ghagras has significantly influenced modern bridal fashion, evolving into the widely celebrated lehenga, a global favourite for weddings and festive occasions.

2. Odhani or Chunari

This graceful piece of cloth, similar to a veil, beautifully completes the traditional attire of Rajasthani women. Commonly known as Chunari or Odhni, it is typically around 3 metres long and 2 metres wide, made from lightweight fabric that drapes effortlessly. The Chunari is adorned with exquisite embellishments such as beadwork, coral shells, sequins, mirror work, and delicate embroidery, making it visually striking and culturally rich. Available in a wide spectrum of vibrant colours, it is worn diagonally across the chest. From one shoulder to the opposite side of the waist, adding modesty and elegance to the overall look. More than just a fashion element, the Odhni holds deep cultural significance. It serves as a veil and symbolizes respect and honor, especially when greeting elders or during religious ceremonies. For Rajasthani women, the Chunari is not merely an accessory but an essential part of tradition and identity.

Accessories & Jewelry Of Rajasthan

1. Pagri Or Turban

The pagri, or generally called turban, is very significant in Rajasthani outfits; people not only wear this pagri but also treat it with respect. The turban is worn with kurtas or anghrakhas. The color and the design of each turban signify individuality. Turban is made with cloth which is twisted and tied on the head and the length of the cloth is 8 inches in breadth and about 80 feet long. The pattern of the pagri distinguishes the economic status of men. Despite of colors and patterns, pagris are also worn in different styles as well.

2. Traditional Jewelry

Jewellery plays a significant role in enhancing the beauty of Rajasthani attire and is an essential expression of the state’s rich cultural heritage. The traditional jewellery of Rajasthan is known for its grandeur, craftsmanship, and deep cultural symbolism. Wealthy women often wear intricate and luxurious pieces like Raani Haar and Jadau jewellery sets, crafted with precious metals and stones. On the other hand, women from tribal communities or common households prefer jewellery made of silver, brass, and alloy materials, which are equally striking and represent the rustic charm of Rajasthan.

Rajasthani women adorn a wide range of ornaments from head to toe. Rakhdi or Borla (maang tikka) for the forehead, Kaanbali and Surliya for the ears, Nath or Nathani for the nose, Bajubandh (armlet) and Bangadi (bangles) for the hands, Kardhani around the waist, and Payal (anklet) along with Bichua (toe rings) for the feet. Each jewellery piece reflects tradition, femininity, and royal aesthetics.

Rajasthani men also embrace jewellery as part of their cultural identity. They wear sleek ear studs, balis, and necklaces made from crystal beads or semi-precious stones. Additionally, noble families often style Kamarbandh (waistband) and the Patka that is a symbol of honour and status, gracefully draped over the shoulder.

3. Footwear

The traditional footwear of Rajasthan, worn by both men and women, is known as Jooti or Mojari. These iconic shoes are handcrafted from high-quality leather, usually made from camel, goat, or sheep skin, materials well suited to the region’s climate and craftsmanship traditions. Earlier, Rajasthani jootis were typically available only in classic shades like black and brown. However, with modern fashion trends influencing designs, today you’ll find vibrant, multi-coloured Mojaris adorned with embroidery, thread work, and beads. Comfortable, durable, and stylish, Rajasthani jootis continue to be a timeless accessory that perfectly complements both traditional and contemporary outfits.

Conclusion

Rajasthan’s traditional clothing beautifully reflects the state’s royal history, vibrant culture, and deep-rooted craftsmanship. From the timeless dhoti and stylish pyjamas worn by men to the elegant ghagras, cholis, and colourful chunaris adorned by women, every garment carries a story of heritage and identity. The exquisite jewellery and handcrafted jootis further enhance the charm of these outfits, making Rajasthani attire admired across India and beyond. Even as fashion evolves, Rajasthan continues to preserve its authenticity by blending tradition with modern trends.
