Before knowing how to do dry cleaning at home, it is important to know which type of clothes can be cleaned. Many clothes can be dry cleaned at home, including items made from cotton, linen, silk, wool, and other fabrics. However, some fabrics and garments are best left to a professional dry cleaner

Know What to Avoid

Avoid DIY dry cleaning for certain fabrics and garments to prevent damage. Delicate fibers like silk velvet, taffeta, and rayon require professional care. Flame-resistant fabrics, structured jackets, crisply pleated items, and heavily beaded or metallic garments also need specialized cleaning. Additionally, leather, suede, natural furs, and large comforters are best left to professionals, while heavily soiled items may require spot cleaning or professional attention to ensure effective cleaning and preservation.

To begin dry cleaning at home, start by selecting a dry cleaning kit that suits your needs. The process typically involves pre-treating stains, then either placing the garment directly into the dryer or enclosing it in a heavy-duty plastic bag for dry cleaning. Be sure to carefully read and follow the kit’s instructions to ensure effective and safe cleaning.

Step 1: Segregation

Segregation is a crucial step in dry cleaning, involving the separation of garments into distinct categories to ensure effective and safe cleaning. This includes separating items by color, fabric type, soil level, and delicacy, as well as identifying special care items such as leather, suede, and fur. Additionally, checking garment labels for specific care instructions and separating items with metal parts, such as zippers or buttons, helps prevent damage during cleaning.

Step 2: Treat Stains

Always check for stains and treat them before dry cleaning. Removing stains totally depends on the type of stains. So, check whether it is oil based or water based and then choose the stain remover accordingly.

Step 3: Turn Clothes Inside Out

For optimal cleaning results, turn garments with body odor inside out before dry cleaning, allowing the cleaning steam to penetrate deeper and target problem spots more effectively, helping to eliminate lingering odors and leave your garments smelling fresh and clean.

Step 4: Use the Dryer Bag

When using a dry cleaning kit with a dryer bag, group similar fabrics together in the bag, avoiding mixing heavy or coarse items with delicate ones. Leave ample space in the bag and dryer to allow fabrics to tumble freely, ensuring effective cleaning and preventing damage to your garments.

Step 5: Prevent Wrinkles

For a smooth dry cleaning process, carefully read the instructions to set a timer for the cycle’s completion. Immediately remove garments from the dryer to prevent wrinkles and creases. Allow slightly damp items to air-dry, then hang structured garments on sturdy hangers and lay knit items flat on a horizontal drying rack to maintain their shape and prevent damage.

Step 6: Create Crisp Lines

Always finish your dry cleaning by removing wrinkles with a steamer or iron. For crisp clothes, use a steam iron or an iron to create sharp collars and pleats. With the right pressing, you can make your clothes look their best.

Step 1: Sort Clothes

Before dry cleaning, always sort your clothes according to color, weight, fabric, etc.

Step 2: Patch test

Always do a patch test of your solvent in the hidden part of your clothes.

Step 3: Remove the stains first

To remove the stains, first you need stain absorbent pads. Place them on the backside of the stained area and put 2-3 drops of stain remover solution and rub it gently using a soft-bristled brush or a soft cloth.

Step 4: Put your clothes in laundry bag

Close all buttons and zippers. Turn your clothes inside out. When the interior is exposed to more of the cleaning steam it will kill the odours. You can also put similar types of fabric in the same laundry bag. Remember, don’t overload your laundry bag as the garments need space to move freely.

Step 5: Run the dryer on ideal setting

Place the laundry bags with dryer sheets. If you don’t have dryer sheets, you can also use a microfibre towel. These sheets or towels are infused with the dry cleaning solution. Run your dryer on a medium to high heat for 30 minutes and wait till the cycle ends.

Step 6: Remove the clothes from the dryer

Remove your clothes from the dryer immediately when the cycle is finished as it will prevent wrinkles. If your clothes are still slightly damp so air-dry them.

Step 7: Let them dry

Hang or lay them depending on their fabric or structure. For example, Try to hang structured clothes on sturdy hangers, whereas, you should lay knitted garments on a flat surface and let them dry.

Conclusion

If you don’t want to spend money on dry cleaning, you can definitely try dry cleaning at home but before trying them at home. Always read the care label instructions carefully. Only with the right methods and techniques, you can try dry cleaning at home. If you have tough stains or the fabric is delicate like silk, velvet, etc, then you should opt for a professional dry cleaner like Tumbledry which is the largest dry clean and laundry service chain in India.
